The $5,000 Mistake
Published 30 days ago • 3 min read
I’ve been building Rooted Dad for more than two years now, and I’m starting to notice a pattern.
It seems that men in general—and dads in particular—are drawn to learning how to make money or how to get fit. That is the primary motivation. A man will drop $5,000 on a business course or spend hours at the gym, but when it comes to investing time, energy, or money into family connection?
Silence.
I’ve seen others in my niche pivot away from this. They started out wanting to help fathers be more present, but they eventually changed. They found that "selling" money or fitness worked better. It makes me wonder: Is this an underserved opportunity, or is it a market that simply isn't interested?
I’m not giving up on Rooted Dad. I’m not being stubborn—I even took a job so I could keep building this on the side. I’m staying because I believe there is a massive training for men to think that "providing" is the only job that matters. They feel they have to work just to "prove" their worth to the family.
The Foundation vs. The Layer
Don't get me wrong. I understand the providing part. Money is the foundation of most modern families. I’ve invested over $15,000 in the last two years on mentors and courses to learn how to make money myself. I’m not pointing fingers; I’ve been there.
And getting fit? It’s super important. You want to stay healthy and enjoy your life. But once the finances and the fitness are taken care of, you have to look at why you are doing it all.
What is the vision for your family?
For me, family unity and connection are the real ROI. I would rather skip a workout than skip a connection moment. Connection isn't just a "nice to have"—it supports everything else. It motivates you to do better in your business and lead by example in the gym.
If your house is a mess, if everyone is yelling, and if you feel stuck in an endless cycle of tantrums and rudeness, the real problem isn't the "behavior."
Behavior is never the problem; it is only a symptom. When a family system is out of balance, it’s because nobody feels secure or safe. Building connection is what gets to the root issues and builds a peaceful home. We have to stop trying to "correct" our kids or our partners and start reorienting towards closeness.
Building Connection Capital
Think of it as Connection Capital. It’s like a bank account. Every time you make a request or ask something of your family, you are drawing from that account.
Our main job as Rooted Dads is to be Connection Builders. Everything else comes after that. In a world where most dads are draining themselves to make more money or straining themselves to get fit, I’m inviting you to make a different choice.
Stop treating the symptoms. Focus on the connection first. When you do, everything else becomes a positive consequence. You’ll feel inspired to provide and motivated to stay fit—not because you’re trying to numb yourself with work or exhaustion, but because you are building out of love, not out of lack.
Rooting for you, Mihai

Last Sunday, we were in a bit of a situation. Aurélie took our main car to go to a convention. My father-in-law has a new, expensive, shiny car. It’s his baby. He didn’t need it that morning, and we needed to get Cléo to her swimming classes. But he didn't trust me with it. I had to go through the hassle of finding another car and moving the car seat in the morning when we were already in a rush. It wasn't about the car, really. It was the feeling. By not trusting me, he made me feel guarded....
730 Days: A Retrospective Cléo turned two yesterday. Today, we went back to the hospital where she was born for a quick check-up. Standing in those hallways, it hit me: I have officially been a dad for 730 days. I don’t have a single "lesson" to share today. Instead, I want to look at a few questions I’ve been asking myself about the last two years. What part of the "old me" had to die? Before Cléo, I lived with a "tropical" mindset. In the tropics, food is abundant, the weather is always...
There is nothing harder for a man than standing in a room where he cannot fix the problem. Aurélie came back on Saturday after being away for a week of training. That night, she hit a wall. She couldn't fall asleep, and for her, sleep isn't just an annoyance. It is a deep-seated fear. She has spent years trying everything: sleep doctors, therapists, hypnosis. As she says, when she can’t sleep, her whole life feels like a mess. My first instinct was to fix it. I did what we usually do: I gave...
